Desktop Metal

Launching a billion dollar brand

Desktop Metal makes easy to use, accessible metal 3d printers. It has two product lines: An office friendly, metal 3d printer and a metal 3d printer for large scale production. Currently they are valued at 1 billion dollar, and are one of the 50 most innovative companies of 2018 according to MIT Tech Review.

I started working with Desktop Metal in 2016, when they were still in stealth mode. I helped build the brand, develop product positioning, leading to a public launch in 2017. This work included branding, website, packaging, event creative, white papers, marketing collateral and creating an asset library

From concept to
launch in 6 weeks

The website was part of a larger effort to publicly announce Desktop Metal. The website was a mechanism for revealing the new brand. More importantly, the website launched two new product lines, the Studio and Production System. The website's primary function was to drive reservations of both systems. We had six weeks to concept, write, design, and produce all assets for the  website. What is shown: (immediately above and below) The Studio System page; (extra below) Mircosite for Desktop Metal Labs, an incubator for experiments, and the Desktop Metal about page.

Creating a scalable design system

Desktop Metal has 20+ SKUs that require some form of packaging, ranging from item labels on consumable to outer packaging for accessories. I worked closely with product and operations to address requirements around shipping and storage of hazardous and fragile contents.  What is shown: (above) Gas for the furnace; (below in order) media cartridges, outer packaging for gas, media and benchmark parts

Supporting sales and channel parters

Marketing efforts focused on event, supporting channel parters and content marketing. To handle the ongoing churn of sales events we created a grab go kit of event assets such as table runners, pop banners, etc. To support channel we created an asset library of content and artifacts ranging from fact sheets, sales books, presentation templates. And finally we supplemental all sales activity with specific content including white papers and case studies.
